philosophy of governance

I can best be described as a political mutt. I am so liberal I am conservative, so conservative I am liberal, and all of that comes with a healthy dose of libertarian leanings. Life is complicated and as such my stances are complicated with nuances and provisos. My stances as they apply to governance are guided by my belief in the necessity of finding balances and being a good human.

Rights

I believe in:

  • personal rights, protections, and freedoms;
  • God and your right not to;
  • the necessity of learning from failures and errors, but not dwelling on them;
  • diversity and the necessity of community;
  • love, compassion, kindness, and human fallibility; and
  • in the United States of America, its people, and their ability to chart a proper course forward.

Obligations

I believe we are obligated to:

  • leave it better than we found it;
  • pursue the mutual benefit of everyone and the community as a whole;
  • act as stewards of this planet; and
  • seek the positive, continuous evolution of humanity.

Money in campaigns

We have to address money in politics. I do not believe money is speech. You are free to stand there and run your mouth all you wish. That is free speech and even that has limits. Anything beyond that is degrees of speech that have to be balanced against other considerations.

Now, the reality of our current times. Without money, I will not be able to get my message out or it will be drowned out by my opponent. For this reason, I will accept any money for campaign purposes that I can legally accept. However, anyone who donates is literally doing so with the understanding that money does not equal access, influence, or a future favor owed. When I am elected, the money in politics issue has to be addressed.
